The Most Important Step

"Spanish Steps" at Rodeo DriveImage via Wikipedia
When we do not pursue very worthy goals, it is often because we think of all the steps we must take to get there.

But the number of steps and their difficulty are irrelevant.  What matters is what we want and the joy we will experience when we attain them.

Many of the most important things in life take a mind-boggling number of steps.  Our educations, caring for our health, building our homes and communities, and even the other lives we decide to create and sustain.

Don't let your mind be boggled.  Focus on the goal and start walking.  You can't even walk a mile if you count all of the steps before you put on your shoes.

So ignore the steps and start the journey.  Think of where you want to go and the happiness that will be yours when you arrive.

Become a Learning Machine

If you find your education lacking, its now easier than ever to learn your way out of it. Universities all over the world put their lectures online. You can find one that teaches the topic of interest in a way that works for you.

And if you don't understand something, you can STOP the lecture and google it until you do. Replay the few seconds of video to make sure you heard it right. Do whatever it takes. You're in control.

Become a learning machine. Then no one can stop you.

Case in point. I lack a computer science background and get stumped when asked about basic software engineering concepts like sorting algorithms.  And I'm a software engineer. Or at least I play one on TV. :-)

So I finally decided to do something about it. I've found several courses on the topic. Here's one from Australia:

Going Beyond Safe Sex

see filenameImage via Wikipedia

I've created a new site that promotes safe sex. Its called evensafersex.com and has a lot of ideas on increasing the safety of your sexual activity.

This is not a medical site by any stretch of the imagination but is simply designed to get people thinking about common habits can transmit disease.

As you'll probably be able to tell, I've been thinking about the topic waaay too much :-)

Let me know what you think.

One More Reason to Like The Incredibles

Morning stretchImage by Eric Bégin via FlickrIts not just the tight story and flawless execution of the specific powers each character has. Its also the philosophy.

I don't think I noticed it before, but its pro-achievement. The message that you should do your best even if it makes upsets the existing order of things is quite clear. Standing out is OK.

There are those among us who achieved great things, without which there would be no personal computers, no Internet and certainly no blogs. They had to take risks and often fight great battles to do so. And they changed the world.

Pixar is just such a company, of course. I'm glad to see them standing up for achievement philosophically.
